Are Your Choices Moving You Closer To Your Goal?

Attitude & Choices (Attitudes & Choices)I don’t know about you, but I believe CHOICES and ATTITUDE are such an important component in our lives.  In a nutshell, our choices determine the course that we take and our attitudes reflect how we view our daily circumstances.  So, with that being said, I think it’s important to remind ourselves that each day we are in charge of our choices and our attitudes.

In fact, one of my favorite quotes is one by Charles R. Swindoll regarding our attitude.  It says, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church....a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.”

So, how does this relate to fitness and nutrition?  Choices and attitude play a HUGE role in the areas of fitness and nutrition.  For example, if you were to say that you are tired of being overweight and you want to lose weight, YOU can make a choice to change.  However, nothing is going to get better if you don’t make a choice to make some changes to achieve this goal.  I believe that some people fall into the trap of thinking that our circumstances totally control what becomes of us, but that is not true.  In fact, this type of thinking only leads us to move farther away from our goals because it makes us feel helpless.  The truth is that we CAN change regardless of our circumstances (e.g., genes, hypothyroidism, little ones at home….).  For instance, the examples that I listed are just some of the obstacles that I deal with, but I made a choice a long time ago that I did not want to be overweight and I have taken the time to both learn and apply what I have learned to help me not only maintain a healthy weight, but more importantly be healthy.  In addition, a positive attitude is vital to staying focused on our goals.  Negative attitudes make us start to doubt our ability to reach our goals.  The attitude quote above shows us how much of an impact attitude has on our lives.

Therefore, I would like to challenge you to actively think about the choices that you are making everyday regarding your fitness and nutrition.  Do you make it a priority to workout at least five times a week?  How is your nutrition…when you have a choice between fruit or candy, what do you choose?  Lastly, do you consciously think about your reactions to your circumstances?  Remember, YOU play a big role in the big picture of your life…so, what are you going to choose?
